Week's Sermon

August 25-31

Luke 12:21-34 ESV

21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Do Not Be Anxious

22 And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[a]26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,[b] yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! 29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. 30 For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, seek his[c] kingdom, and these things will be added to you.

32 “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Give up on yourself and let God work for you.

We store treasures for ourselves.

We have refrigerators that store our food, yet we worry about what to eat.

We have closet, full of clothes yet we worry about what to wear.

We have savings but still worry about never having enough.

Our lives are filled with worldly possesions and we worry about the things Jesus called “these things.” We worry and as a result, do not see the glory of God in our life. We do not appreciate God for what He has done in our life or even the promises He has made to us through the words in the bible.

We need to be rich towards the things of God not of our ourselves. God has promised and He will deliver. If our mind is focused toward His principles ( praises, worship, evangelism, fellowship), our own problems, our worries will be taken care of because to us, our burdens seem mighty but to God they are not.

Jesus said to consider the ravens. What about the fowls? Both animals do not sow. They do not reap. They do not have storehouses or barns, yet God feeds them and cares for them. How much more us? We are more valuable.  We have to sow and reap our own food.We have storehouses and barns to store food for long term, yet we still worry about what to eat. Many of us do not even know why we worry so much yet we do. We cannot add one hour or a day or a year to our life by worrying. Jesus wants us to give up worry about ourselves and focus on Him, for He is mightier than our burdens.

Consider the lilles.  They are motionless and therefore do not toil or work for their food. Jesus said not even Solomon with all his glory was as clothed as the lilles in the fields. If God clothes the grass and lilles how much more you. When a farmer plants a seed he does not have to worry about how the seeds will germinate into fruits. All the farmer does is to water the soil but the processes by which the seeds germinate is not up to the farmer and not an inch of worrying by the farmer will make the seeds germinate any faster than the Lord allows. Is it not more important for the farmer to have faith in God than to have fruit? His worrying will hinder his riches towards God.The Father knows what you need. If he cares for all the countless insects how much more you.

Let God go to work for your life by Seeking first the kingdom of God and all His rightousness and all shall be added unto you. Do not seek after treasures in yourself because where you store your treasure, thats where your heart will be.

Amen.
